Wood End - Herbert Mehew
There were three Mehew families, those of Frank, Bert & Ernie, each much involved in Parish affairs. Frank lived in an old thatched cottage opposite the workhouse yard at Wood End. He was an engineer by trade and one of his many jobs was being in charge of the water engines.
Bert (pictured) lived in a bungalow next to the old workhouse yard, almost opposite Frank. Bert's business was mainly poultry and egg collecting from places as far as Chatteris. He regularly attended the St Ives poultry market on Mondays, trading on behalf of his customers. He was also an agent for the British Basket Company at Wisbech, selling all types of fruit containers from a building at the side of the bungalow.
Ernie was also a poultry farmer, keeping much stock behind his house at Rectory Road and at Low Hill next to the cow pastures.
